The best 404 pages can be the embodiment of good design. They're a functional contribution to the user experience but they can all provide a brief moment of delight.

In an ideal world, nobody will ever see your clever 404 design, which may make you wonder how much time to bother spending on it. But the reality is that even the best web design can end up with broken links – or the user may simply input an incorrect URL. For those moments a good 404 page can prevent lost leads, redirecting a user, hopefully in a way that will minimise their frustration at getting lost.
