Our Verdict

Creative PCs tend to be large, heat generating monsters or portable and made by Apple. This compact workstation from Minisforum runs Windows on an Intel i9 processor, and has a slot for you to add your own graphics card plus more networking potential than we’ve ever seen on a PC before. It’s got the chops to whizz through tasks in Lightroom and InDesign, can hook up to multiple monitors and connect to a lot of peripherals, and definitely has its eye on the Mac Mini’s place as the small desktop machine of choice.

For

  • Compact and powerful
  • Networking powerhouse
  • Not too expensive

Against

  • Intel 13th-gen getting a bit old
  • Integrated graphics unless you add your own card

Did you ever install a CD-ROM drive in a desktop PC? These disc readers come in a standardised form that slides neatly into a slot in the case, a particular width and length, and the Minisforum MS-01 mini workstation is a very similar size. There's no slot or tray in the front, of course, such things having been consigned to the past, but you do get a power button that’s in exactly the same place as a CD-ROM’s eject switch.

This means it’s a black cuboid, just over an inch thick and ready to melt into the space below your monitors and basically become invisible once installed. It’s got loads of connectivity, plenty of processor oomph, and quite a reasonable price.
