RenderMan 25 review: a small update with one amazing tool every 3D artist will love

The same 3D tools as Pixar uses, RenderMan 25 remains an eye-catching draw.

Our Verdict

RenderMan 25 offers access to the same tools as Pixar, and that's always exciting. Though version 25 isn’t as bold as 24, this suite of 3D tools still delivers on a number of fronts, especially with its world-class denoiser.

For

  • World-class technology
  • Strong development team
  • Unbelievably good denoiser

Against

  • Better suited for studios
  • Steep learning curve
  • Lacks comprehensive documentation

RenderMan 25 is the latest edition of Pixar's rendering tools, available to everyone. RenderMan has always been a bit of an enigma in my experience. The fact that it’s been used to render some of the biggest, and most high-profile, animated feature films only contributes to this mystery.

It has been a perfect renderer for animation and VFX studios to create breathtaking final-frame films, but it’s other renderers such as V-Ray and Arnold that have become the go-to programs for the overwhelming majority of the 3D industry.
