Atari 2600+ review: retro analogue design makes an almost excellent comeback

This miniaturised edition of Atari’s classic games console is an affectionate callback to 1970s design.

Our Verdict

The Atari 2600+ is a well-designed bit of throwback hardware, expertly capturing the feel of the classic console while making it compact enough so that it never feels unsightly. It’s nature to play original cartridges promises to reward collectors and is a nice prospect, even if the reliance on emulation disappoints and it makes the out-of-the-box game library rather slim by other mini console standards. Even still, it’s the best way to revisit the Atari 2600.

For

  • Authentic woodgrain model
  • Plays original Atari 2600 cartridges
  • Almost no latency issues

Against

  • No manual or mains plug
  • Its still emulation

At just 80% the size of the original unit, you could be fooled into thinking the new Atari 2600+ was yet another one of those mini game consoles. You know the sort, the one that proved very popular five or six years ago when companies like PlayStation and Nintendo shrunk down their famous systems, packed in 10 or so games, and called it a day. (In fact, read our best retro game consoles guide for more.)

In actual fact, Atari's take on the idea is gloriously analogue by comparison. Not just because it's a console capable of playing original 2600 – and, as a nice bonus, 7800 – game cartridges, but also as it's impeccably authentic from a design perspective.

His favourite video game is Crash Bandicoot 3: Warped on the original PlayStation, which he’ll defend as having the very best 3D platforming in a game that doesn’t include the word “Mario”.
