Enter the Cyclus paper poster design competition now!
Is it possible to create something unique while still promoting an environmental message? Paper-maker Arjowiggins Graphic reckons so, and that’s by using Cyclus recycled paper. And to help get the message out, Arjowiggins has teamed up with Cyclus distributor Antalis UK to launch a competition to showcase the quality of the paper as a poster material.
The organisers have collaborated with Jacknife studios, the company behind iconic gig and tour posters for the likes of Blur, Queens of the Stone Age and the Foo Fighters.
Jacknife founder and lead designer, Chris Hopewell, has produced a bespoke, limited edition poster inspired by the forest to showcase the quality of Cyclus. The poster, known as 'The Guardian', is hand silk-screen printed by Jacknife on Cyclus Offset 300gsm 100% recycled in a limited edition.
1000 limited edition prints of 'The Guardian' have been distributed to UK designers who, along with the broader UK design community, are invited to enter the competition by designing their own poster and posting it in on Instagram or Twitter using the hashtag #cycluspaper.
Chris Hopewell will pick a winner from those entries, and that design will be hand silk-screen printed by Jacknife, then framed and awarded at the Antalis Review at The Village Underground in Shoreditch on 29 September 2016.
To help you with your design, the organisers have passed on some tips for you to follow:
- The design can be any size or dimension between A1 and A2
- It can be portrait or landscape
- Jacknife can hand screen print up to four colours
- Photographic images aren’t recommended, although if the image is half-toned it can work
- Jacknife suggest that very fine tonal gradients should be avoided
- The colours need to be provided as separate layers in a PSD document
- Very fine lines and light shading gradients should be avoided as these are not suitable for screen printing
- The design should be big and bold without too much intricate detail as this makes it more complicated to hand silk screen print
- You’re welcome to look at www.jacknifeprints.com or any other reference of screen printed posters for inspiration
- Jacknife will add the necessary technical finishing processes such as the registration and bleed marks to the winning poster
The competition is already open, having commenced on 15 February, and it will run until 30 June 2016 – so get your entries onto Twitter or Instagram with the hashtag #cycluspaper!
