V-Ray 7 review: now features Gaussian Splatting but generally a bare-bones release

A solid new release with limited new features.

Our Verdict

This is a solid update and the beginning of a new set of content releases for V-Ray generally. I love the new support for Gaussian Splatting and to be fair, I probably would have been happy with just this feature. Improvements to the Light Lister are another welcome change, although, like most other features in this release, there’s little to shout about.

For

  • Gaussian Splatting support
  • Caustics on the GPU
  • Light Lister Improvements

Against

  • Relatively expensive
  • Limited new features

V-Ray 7 is finally here, and it's still one of the few 3D packages that have maintained a simple numbering system rather than releasing annual updates. V-Ray is still in the best overall position in our best rendering software guide and I haven’t seen anything in the past year to cause its position to be questioned.
